The National Obedience
“The Masonic Order is one thing, the Obedience is another, but the Masonic Order can only endure through the Obedience’s in their role as groupings of Lodges.”
Masonic Obedience’s are jurisdictions within the broader Masonic Order, each with its own hierarchy and practices. Understanding them involves recognizing their particular Traditions, and Teachings, as well as their systematic structures and relationships with other Masonic bodies. Obedience’s typically adheres to the principles of Freemasonry, which include brotherhood/sisterhood, moral and ethical development, and charitable work. However, specific practices and interpretations may vary among different Obedience’s.
Each Obedience presents an outward form through its administrative structure, the Rites it amalgamates, the mix or non-mix of members, the place it intends to give to the absolute freedom of thought and the principle of recognition. It is a regulatory power, capable of issuing Letters, Patents, Authorities and constituting an administrative composition, but it can in no way claim to identify itself solely with the Masonic Order, of which it is ultimately only a simple transmission belt. Some Rites that are practiced in association with the Masonic Order are not fundamentally Masonic. By definition, and the History of Freemasonry largely bears witness to this, the Obedience’s are infinitely divisible. By definition in the same way, and the perpetuity of the Initiatory Transmission of Freemasonry bears witness to this just as widely, the Order is indivisible.
The Initiatic Tradition
In contradiction to what is commonly taught, Freemasonry is not a society of thought, nor a club belonging to the world, nor a fraternal mutual aid society, nor a charitable association. It is an Initiatory Order, one of many expressions of the Original Ancient Tradition. As such, it is rooted in the practice of befitting rituals based on the careful formulation of symbolic acts in a sacred space and time that unites the spiritual with the physical.
The rituals of the Masonic Order can trace much of their origins in History. This History has been referred to as the Sacred and/or Royal Art of Symbolic Building. Additionally, these histories are further expressions of the Original Ancient Traditions known under terms such as Sacred Science, Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Alchemy, and Spirituality; that constitute Rites, each of which carries its own understandings.
The System of Initiation and Transmission often refers to passing on knowledge, skills, or traditions from one generation or individual to another. It typically involves a structured process where experienced individuals or elders guide and teach novices or younger members. Understanding this system involves recognizing the rituals, teachings, and relationships involved in the transfer of knowledge or traditions. It can vary greatly depending on cultural, religious, or organizational contexts.
An Initiatic Order is a structured group or organization that follows a specific path of spiritual, philosophical, or mystical teachings. Understanding such an order involves grasping its core beliefs, practices, and rituals, as well as the hierarchical structure and levels of initiation within the group. It often entails a process of personal transformation and growth guided by the teachings and practices of the Order, leading members to deeper insights, self-awareness, and spiritual development.
